ROTARY CLUB OF SYDNEY-SUNRISE
GLOBAL GRANT PROJECTS

Global projects are typically beyond the financial funding capabilities of most individual Rotary
clubs such as our own. But there is strength in numbers as the projects we undertake typically
receive funding from other Rotary clubs and organizations across North America, our own
Rotary District in addition to others. The Rotary Foundation will match (80%) of contributions
made by Rotary Districts from around the world, provided the project falls within at least one of
Rotary’s “Areas of Focus” and meets Rotary’s standards of sustainability, measurability, due
diligence and good governance.

While this page focuses on the global projects we have and are currently working on, we are
actively seeking future projects. In addition, we continue to support Rotary’s Emergency
Disaster Relief, Polio Eradication and other programs.

Our Current Project – Hope of the Nation School, Uganda

This is a small project and will involve what we call a District Grant with no contributions from
other Rotary Districts or 80% matching from the Rotary Foundation. RC Sydney Sunrise, in
cooperation with RC Kiwatule (D9213) and African Initiatives for Change (AIC), is planning to
secure a Rotary District Grant to improve the capacity and sustainability of the “Hope of the
Nation Primary and Nursery School” in the Nakivale Refugee Camp in Uganda.
The project will pay $7 annual school fees for refugee orphans who would otherwise not be
able to attend the school. Also, each child will be provided with essential scholastic
materials such as pens, books and other supplies. The school will also be able to purchase
additional desks, blackboards, etc. AIC will play a pivotal role in overseeing project
implementation including management & monitoring of fund usage to ensure it is spent
efficiently and in line with the project’s goals.
RC Kiwatule will provide an extra layer of oversight to ensure the money is spent as planned
and will make sure receipts are received for all expenditures. They will also discuss
opportunities for larger projects which will have greater impact. Such larger projects are
done through Global Grants which demand a higher level of detail with more emphasis on
sustainability.
Community Assessment:
AIC volunteers conducted a community assessment in various refugee zones. The focus
was to identify marginalized refugee children; especially orphans and those with disabilities,
who are not attending school due to cost. The process involved direct engagement with
families/guardians to understand their unique challenges. Using a carefully structured
questionnaire, valuable data was collected. This data was used to develop our plan to support
these vulnerable children to get an education despite the barriers they face
Sustainability:
To ensure the longevity of the project, the school is working to eventually attract private
paying (Ugandan) students (also see “Outcome and Impact”. A portion of these fees will be
used to help cover the school fees for the orphaned students. Also, the additional income will
help with such things as additional desks, quality blackboards and employment of additional
teachers.
Outcome and Impact:
Immediate outcome will be the purchase of additional desks, blackboards and the
enrollment of additional orphaned children for the next school year beginning Feb 2026. This
is a small start towards a larger outcome. Currently, the school has one Ugandan student and
one Ugandan teacher. For the longer term, AIC believes development of the school’s
infrastructure, academic performance and quality of education will attract more Ugandan
children from within and around the refugee camp. AIC is also committed to launching a
feeding program to ensure students travelling from outside the refugee camp can access a meal
during the day., Further, employment of more Ugandan teachers will and other improvements
Timeline for Implementation:
Final Grant Approval is expected during September, 2025, Implementation of the project will
begin on receipt of funds
